Lace Re-fronting Wigs

Re-fronting wigs is a cheap way to create wigs that have a hairline you want without spending a lot of time and money of knotting. To do technique you need two of the same cheap wigs - one to cut up and use as extra hair and one to add the re-front onto. It's important to note that cheap wigs are usually rows of wefts so they have to be worn down.

1) Stick the cling-filmed template with the original and new hairline on the block.

2) Angle the lace so that it sits in the right angle on the forehead and so that there's room for the lace to be glued below the new hairline (for this we were using tutu net)

3) Pin the lace into place, first at top and bottom then at the sides. (none in the traintrack of the two hairlines.

4) Add in any darts that need to be added on the top of the head but they can't go over the new hairline. Loosely dart the front to get it out of the way.

5) Roughly sew in where the new hairline needs to be so that if the piece is taken off the block it can be seen (loose so it can be taken out at the end,)

6) Place the wig on the block as close to the hairline as it needs to be so the least amount of knotting is needed. Pin just in front of where the wig is to mark how far back you need to whip.

7) Whip the darts into place with clear thread.

8) Once the darts are whipped (only need to go back to where the wig is going to be) put the wig back into place and pin with a lot of pins.

9) Take the whole piece off the block, turn inside out and sew the new lace onto the old lace wig. Need to do two rows of stitches like traintracks so that it's secure.

10) To knot, can bulk knot at first, then lots of single knots to hide the bulk then sparodic knotting to mimic the hairline.

Evaluation:
I feel for a first attempt this wasn't too bad. I drew the random hairline not too realistically which meant the whole piece didn't look right but the whole piece was for practice. I was very pleased with the stitches that mark the hairline and the darts in the lace as I think these were very neat and held the shape after I took the piece off the block. Next time I would make the darts much tighter as I believe they were a bit loose and obviously the hairlines would be drawn better as they'd be based off the template from the model.
