Mould Making

There are 3 types of silicone:

 * Condensation Silicone - This is the standard mould making rubber referred to as tin silicone. It is an industrial silicone that can work with any material.

* Addition Cure Silicone - This is a medical grade silicone referred to as platinum silicone. As it's a medical silicone it is sensitive to latex, water, sulphur etc.

* Asitoxic Silicone - This is more commonly known as bathroom sealer. It is often used for a paint base for silicone used to make silicone paint.

1) Mix equal parts of A and B to make a silicone mould (need to always use clean cups and mixing sticks as the two silicones can't cross-contaminate)

2) Zero the scales so that all they're weighing is the material not the cups.

3) Put half of the weight you need from part A into one cup and the other half from part B into the other cup.

4) Put part A and part B into one bowl and mix together thoroughly (don't whisk just stir as you don't want to have air bubbles in the mixture.

5) Pour the mixture into the clay mould from a height so that any bubbles in the mixture pop. Keep pouring into one position in the mould and let the silicone find it's own way.

6) This mixture cures in 8-10 minutes so leave the the mould on a flat surface for 10-15 minutes.

7) Wait until the silicone is set completely (has resistance when touched) to de-mould. Pull the silicone from the side and pull out of the clay.

Evaluation:

Overall I was very happy with my mould. I think I mixed the two silicones well and I poured into the clay correctly. The mould came out just as it should have and I only needed to cut a few extra bits of silicone from around the edge. Quite a few bits of clay came off in the mould which were quite difficult to get off. I did this using IPA. I think this will work well when I cast it.
